After a powerful meeting with an island, exotic and in many ways different from where I come from, Iceland, I tried to put my impressions into my work here. Like in Iceland, weather and nature shape the people.

Shortfilm

Cinematography in Rodrigues

– Mr. James Castel, the face behind the camera

The cinematography has been introduced in Rodrigues in the 60s – 70s when traditional Mauritian traders settled on the island. There was the projection of American western movies and Bollywood Indian movies in a small movie theatre in Port Mathurin known as ‘Cinema Metro’. It was one of the main leisure and entertainment at that time.

James Castel fondly remembered the time when he was only a kid, he used to go to the ‘Cinema Metro’ with his parents and friends. Afterwards, they used to collect the remaining film strips and played with it, creating their own short movie.

James Castel has been one of the first rodriguan pioneers for the introduction and development of cinematography in Rodrigues. Since childhood, he has always been inspired to master the art of cinematography and photography. He was a passionate and still is, an artist and always eager to learn new skills and to improve himself.

This is how, before the introduction of television set in households in the 80s, James with a group of young rodriguans, was part of the project of mobile cinema, where movie sessions entitled ‘Cinema Mobile’ were organised in villages around the island. The cinematic equipment was carried in a jeep or truck and temporarily installed in a village for a movie night for the pleasure of the villagers. The vehicle was like a movie laboratory with all the equipment and tools to repair or replace film strips and so.

James began as a projection assistant, projectionist until he produced the very first short-documentary in Rodrigues which depicts the process of net-fishing (a traditional fishing method). The short-documentary was produced in the context of a movie competition where it was ranked at the 5th place. The documentary was then broadcasted in Mauritius and also in France.

James has been behind and in front of the camera, where he got acquainted with most of the aspects and secrets of the cinematography universe. His passion for this field has enabled him to meet his counterparts in the Indian ocean namely Mauritius, Reunion Island and share knowledge and skills in this industry.

Happily, retired since 2022 after more than 40 years of good and loyal service as Audio-Assistant for the public sector in Rodrigues, James fully takes advantage of his range of passions as a visual artist, poet and writer. He wishes that the development of cinematography and creative industry in Rodrigues emphasised on capacity-building and training of human resource.

“Walk along the beach”

I took a walk along the beach and collected some dead corals and a lot of rubbish. This hurt me very much. When I walk over a sea urchin, that hurts me too but it was my fault. When mosquitos bit me, it hurts as well. But the rubbish is human hurting me.

TRANSIT - TRANSITION

The transit of Venus undoubtedly put Rodrigues in the limelight at that  time of the event . A small , mountainous , remote island with mostly fisherman, less known, barely accessible and  very much closed on itself . It reminded me of how not an event but a simple print went around the world putting another island , Japan which was similarly closed on itself to the big world was put into the limelight suddenly but of course in a much bigger way , Hokusai’s great wave off Kanagawa .

This  Installation  is composed of 3 body of works where tried to make an juxtaposition by taking three elements of both islands .

Th event , an artist and  a print .

The transit of Venus , the event itself

Benjamin Gontran , the best known accordéon player of the island .

Print of banana leaves with the blue that was a crucial part of the print .
